against chuck hagel, what is it about? is it for show? is it about something hagel said in the cloakroom? is it the unfairness of vietnam itself, that some went and some didn't? is it about johnson's inability to win that war or end it? what burns so deeply in john mccain these days? it seems to excite those who knew nothing about vietnam but want to replay it. we dig into the deep well of resentment burning in john mccain's patriotic heart. a resentment not against the north vietnamese who imprisoned and tortured him all those years, not against george w. bush and his political henchmen who tried to stain mccain's reputation back in 2000, but against a guy who fought against fear and rallied against wounds just like he did in the same army of america's long nightmare in vietnam, chuck hagel. a nightmare, by the way, whose flashbacks must haunt still the mind and heart of john sidney mccain. i'm joined by david corn and joy reid, both msnbc contributors. both of you, sir and lady, are younger than me, but i'm younger than me, but i'm convinced we're watching a flashback. watch this. here

, we saw in the confirmation hearings with chuck hagel that cruise was by far the most prosecutorial, the most aggressive of the questioners of both of those folks, and he is someone who makes no bones about his -- both his ambition and his willingness to buck how the senate is supposed to work. we're going to hear more from him before we hear less. >> you know, the way the senate is supposed to work is that you don't ask a question about the friends of hamas until you check out whether there is even such an organization as the friends of hamas. just saying. margaret, could marco rubio and the foreign trip. he has credentials and has given foreign policy speeches. here he was with king abdullah. he was in israel and had a press conference there, met with netanyahu. he is really -- there he is with shimon peres. there is quite a lot of activity by marco rubio, even since the state of the union water episode. >> well, he has now checked his foreign policy box. you'll remember these are not always easy trips. mitt romney did not have a good trip -- when it took one during his campaign.

, and obviously the white house isn't going to listen to 15 republican senators opposing chuck hagel, whom they say they're sticking with. what are the other pit falls going forward as we await action on hagel next week? >> you know, i think you've hit on it, an dre. we continue to await action on hagel next week. in theory the pit fall is something comes out in the next couple of days that in some way disqualifies him. i know not one of the 15 republican senators who signed this letter asking president obama to withdraw chuck hagel as his nominee for secretary of defense held even a 1% hope that that would happen. they do not think that hagel is the right person on the right time. i do think it's worth noting is john mccain. we've talked about john mccain and chuck hagel. once very close friends. mccain during the chuck hagel confirmation hearing was one of the most poignant, maybe ted cruise was the most poignant, but one of the most pointed critics of haling. mccain not putting his name to that letter. it's -- this seems like a foregone conclusion here in that this is much more for the
